Our Story
Founded in 1979 by journalists Dick and Marcia Fogel and Wayne Futak, Bay City News has long served as a cornerstone of Bay Area journalism. Originally based in San Francisco, BCN trained and mentored generations of journalists who went on to lead in newsrooms, classrooms and public institutions.
Dick Fogel, a former Oakland Tribune editor and advocate for open government, helped shape the principles that informed California’s public records laws and the national Freedom of Information Act.
Since day one, our mission has been to provide original, accurate, and reliable reporting to media professionals across the region. Today, more than 100 subscribers depend on our wire service—including every major TV, radio, print and digital newsroom in the Bay Area.
In 2018, veteran journalist and former BCN intern Katherine Rowlands acquired the company to lead it into a new era, while preserving its commitment to public service journalism.
